FYI for our customers for the season:
As we enter the fall and winter months many pests will gain access to commercial and residential properties via weep holes. Weep holes are either the gaps left between bricks in external walls or the small openings in window framing. Weep holes do serve some important purposes, 1) Ventilation of internal wall cavity's (without ventilation, mildew, dry rot and dampness reduce the life of the internal wall studs and other building materials.) 2) Drainage- water that enter the cavity due to capillary action, condensation, or damage needs to escape somewhere.
Though necessary, weep holes provide access to the wall cavity for rodents and insects, especially as temperatures drop and pests seek harborage for warmth, food and shelter. Bees and wasps also love cavities. Field mice make a track through weep holes looking for nesting sites, and Snakes, cockroaches and spiders as we all know, find there way in as well. Many homeowners and commercial building occupants will resort to blocking weep holes with any number of materials to keep pests out. These so-called solutions obstruct airflow to the cavity and setup moisture problems down the road. The best thing to do is to use small mesh screening inserts or weep hole inserts. These will keep the pests from entering if used properly.
When thinking about pests that enter weep holes, keep this rule of thumb in mind. Rats require a space of only 1/2 inch wide to enter a building. Mice require a 1/4 inch space, and most insect pest require only 1/16 of an inch.
